The Department of Hematology focuses on the study, diagnosis, and treatment of disorders related to blood and blood-forming tissues. Hematology encompasses a wide range of conditions, including those affecting red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, bone marrow, and the coagulation system. Here are the key areas of focus within the Department of Hematology:

  1. Anemia and Red Blood Cell Disorders:
    • Diagnosing and treating conditions that lead to a decrease in red blood cells, such as iron-deficiency anemia, vitamin B12 deficiency, and hemolytic anemias.
  2. White Blood Cell Disorders:
    • Addressing diseases that affect white blood cells, including leukemias (cancers of the blood and bone marrow) and lymphomas (cancers of the lymphatic system).
  3. Platelet Disorders:
    • Managing conditions related to platelet dysfunction or low platelet counts, which can lead to bleeding disorders or clotting disorders.
  4. Bone Marrow Disorders:
    • Diagnosing and treating diseases that affect the bone marrow, including myeloproliferative disorders and myelodysplastic syndromes.
  5. Coagulation and Thrombosis:
    • Studying and managing disorders of blood clotting and thrombosis, such as hemophilia, deep vein thrombosis (DVT), and clotting factor deficiencies.
  6. Hemoglobinopathies:
    • Treating genetic disorders affecting hemoglobin, such as sickle cell disease and thalassemia.
  7. Blood Transfusion Medicine:
    • Overseeing blood transfusions and managing complications related to transfusions, as well as ensuring a safe and adequate blood supply.
  8. Hematologic Malignancies:
    • Specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of cancers that originate in the blood and bone marrow, including leukemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma.
  9. Hemostasis and Thrombosis:
    • Studying and managing disorders of blood clotting and bleeding, including conditions like von Willebrand disease and antiphospholipid syndrome.
  10. Stem Cell Transplantation:
    • Utilizing stem cell transplantation as a treatment option for certain hematologic disorders, such as leukemia, lymphoma, and certain genetic conditions.
  11. Research and Innovation:
    • Conducting research to advance the understanding of hematologic disorders and develop new treatment modalities.

Hematologists often work in collaboration with other medical specialties, including oncology, internal medicine, and surgery, to provide comprehensive care for patients with blood-related disorders. The field is dynamic, with ongoing research contributing to the development of new diagnostic tools and therapeutic interventions.

General surgery is a discipline that requires knowledge of and responsibility for the preoperative, operative, and postoperative management of patients with a broad spectrum of diseases, including those which may require nonoperative, elective, or emergency surgical treatment.
