The Skin & VD (Venereology and Dermatology) department primarily focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, and management of diseases and conditions affecting the skin, hair, nails, and mucous membranes, as well as sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Here’s an overview of the key areas of focus within this department:

  1. Dermatological Conditions: This includes a wide range of skin disorders such as acne, eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis, rosacea, fungal infections (such as ringworm), viral infections (such as herpes and warts), bacterial infections (such as cellulitis and impetigo), and parasitic infestations (such as scabies and lice).

  2. Skin Cancer: Dermatologists are trained to diagnose and treat various types of skin cancer, including basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. They often perform screenings, biopsies, and surgical procedures for the removal of cancerous lesions.

  3. Cosmetic Dermatology: This involves procedures aimed at improving the appearance of the skin, such as laser therapy, chemical peels, microdermabrasion, botox injections, dermal fillers, and other cosmetic treatments for issues like wrinkles, scars, pigmentation disorders, and aging skin.

  4. Hair and Nail Disorders: Dermatologists diagnose and treat conditions affecting the hair and nails, including alopecia (hair loss), nail fungus, ingrown toenails, and disorders of hair growth and structure.

  5. Pediatric Dermatology: Dermatologists specializing in pediatric dermatology focus on diagnosing and treating skin conditions that affect infants, children, and adolescents, including eczema, diaper rash, birthmarks, and genetic skin disorders.

  6. Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs): Venereologists within the department specialize in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of STIs such as HIV/AIDS, syphilis, gonorrhea, chlamydia, genital herpes, genital warts (caused by HPV), and others. They may also provide counseling, education, and support services related to sexual health and prevention.

  7. Allergy and Immunology: Some dermatologists have expertise in diagnosing and managing allergic skin conditions, such as contact dermatitis, urticaria (hives), and drug reactions. They may conduct allergy testing and provide immunotherapy for certain skin allergies.

  8. Dermatopathology: Dermatopathologists are specialized pathologists who examine skin tissue samples under a microscope to diagnose various skin diseases, including inflammatory skin disorders, autoimmune diseases, infectious diseases, and skin cancer.

The Skin & VD department often collaborates with other medical specialties, such as internal medicine, rheumatology, oncology, and infectious diseases, to provide comprehensive care for patients with complex medical conditions. Additionally, dermatologists may be involved in research and clinical trials aimed at advancing the understanding and treatment of skin diseases.
